Research-informed genomic education with counselling-informed support for individuals and families
Our Mission
Discern Genomics provides research-informed genomic education with counselling-informed support for individuals and families. We help people better understand genetic and genomic information, including inherited conditions, rare disorders, and naturally occurring genetic variation, through accessible explanation, evidence-based discussion, and supportive reflection.
Our approach combines current scientific evidence in genomics with counselling-informed communication practices that support person-centred discussion of complex information. Our support sessions may include discussion of genetic reports, scientific literature, family history questions, emerging genomic research, and uncertainty relating to genetic information. Support is tailored to the questions and context brought by each client.
Discern Genomics provides independent, non-clinical educational support and does not provide medical diagnosis, clinical genetic counselling, psychotherapy, treatment, or medical advice. The service is not a substitute for NHS or regulated clinical genetics services.
Our personalised support sessions are educational and supportive in nature, providing additional time, context, and space to explore genetic information in a reflective setting that supports a non-directive, client-led approach.
Ways We Can Support You
Understanding genetic reports and genomic information
If you have received genetic test results or genomic information, we can help you better understand the terminology, concepts, and scientific context surrounding the information provided. Sessions may include discussion of relevant scientific literature, emerging genomic evidence, and questions you may wish to explore further with healthcare professionals.
Exploring family history and inherited conditions
An opportunity to discuss family history patterns, inherited conditions, and general genetic concepts in a supportive, educational setting.
Reflecting on uncertainty and emotional impact
Genetic information can sometimes raise uncertainty, difficult questions, or emotional stress. Sessions provide supportive, counselling-informed space to reflect on uncertainty, organise thoughts and questions, and explore practical or communication considerations at your own pace.
Support alongside clinical care
Support before or after NHS or private healthcare appointments, helping you prepare questions, understand terminology and concepts discussed during appointments, and reflect on information received.
Free Introductory Meeting
A free, no-obligation 15-minute conversation to talk through your situation, ask questions, and see whether Discern Genomics is the right fit for you.
