The information below outlines what to expect from a personalised support session and how to prepare for it.

1. Who this service may be suitable for

This service may be helpful if you are:

  • Looking for clearer understanding of genetic or genomic information in a non-clinical educational setting

  • Navigating uncertainty, complex information, or unanswered questions

  • Seeking additional time and space outside healthcare appointments

  • Reflecting on the personal or family impact of genetic information

  • Supporting yourself or a family member in understanding genomic information

  • Interested in discussing scientific literature or emerging genomic research relevant to your questions


2. What to expect

Sessions are available online or in person, depending on availability and your preference.

Sessions are tailored to your questions, circumstances, and areas of interest, and may include:

  • Educational discussion of genetic and genomic information

  • Scientific literature contextualisation and discussion of emerging genomic research

  • Supportive reflection relating to uncertainty, communication, or personal considerations

  • Discussion of questions you may wish to explore further with healthcare professionals

Sessions are confidential and provide dedicated time and supportive space to explore genetic information in an accessible, collaborative, and client-led way.

Discern Genomics provides independent, research-informed genomic education with counselling-informed support. The service is non-clinical and does not provide medical diagnosis, clinical genetic counselling, psychotherapy, treatment, or medical advice. It is not a substitute for NHS or regulated clinical genetic services.

Where appropriate, you may be encouraged to seek or continue support from relevant healthcare professionals or regulated clinical services.


3. Preparing for your session

After booking, you will receive:

  • A short optional intake form

  • An informed consent form and information about the service to review before your session

  • Guidance on what information may be helpful to bring

  • Joining details for your session

You are welcome to bring:

  • Genetic test reports or genomic information (if available)

  • Family history information

  • Notes, questions, or topics you would like to explore

  • Relevant scientific literature or research information you would like to discuss


4. Choosing a session focus

To help you make the most of your session, you will have the option to select a focus area during booking.
