About the Founder

Discern Genomics was founded by Dr Guan Wang in April 2025. A geneticist by training, she has over a decade of academic research experience spanning human genetics, exercise biology, and health sciences.

Dr Wang completed her PhD in Integrated Biology at the University of Glasgow in 2013, where her research explored the intersections of genomics, exercise, and health. She subsequently held academic research positions at the University of Glasgow and later the University of Brighton, where she progressed through research roles and served as a Senior Research Fellow until 2023.

During her academic career, Dr Wang contributed to interdisciplinary research across genetics, exercise, and health-related fields and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, including research articles, reviews, and book chapters. Her work has been presented at national and international scientific conferences. She is a full member of the British Society for Genetic Medicine (BSGM) and the Physiological Society. Since 2018, Dr Wang has collaborated with researchers at Yale School of Medicine, with early work focusing on genetics and exercise biology. From 2021, this collaboration expanded to include research exploring complex conditions such as long-haul COVID-19 and has led to wider collaborations across Yale University.

Following her academic career, Dr Wang’s work has increasingly focused on research-informed genomic education with counselling-informed support, alongside continued collaboration with researchers and clinicians. As part of this work, she contributed to patient communities and research teams in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research through her role as a Research & Development Consultant at Beijing AskHelpU Medical Technology Co., Ltd. (2023–2026), contributing to the translation of emerging genetic findings and biological mechanisms into accessible insights and their relevance to research teams and patient communities.

Recognising that genetic information may raise complex personal questions and emotional responses, Dr Wang has undertaken counselling training to support a reflective, person-centred, and communication-focused approach to genomic education. She completed the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (2025) and Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies (2026) through the Counselling & Psychotherapy Training Academy (CPTA), awarded by the Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB).

Through Discern Genomics, Dr Wang brings together scientific expertise in genomics with counselling-informed communication and support to help individuals and families better understand complex genetic information in a non-clinical educational setting.
